What this election cycle was missing was a good old fashioned sex scandal. And now, we have one. And not just any sex scandal, a gay sex scandal involving a Republican and an underage boy. Awesome! My motto is - if you’re going to do something, do it big. Rep. Mark Foley didn’t let me down.
Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fla., resigned from Congress on Friday, effective immediately, in the wake of questions about e-mails he wrote a former male page.
“I am deeply sorry and I apologize for letting down my family and the people of Florida I have had the privilege to represent,” he said in a statement issued by his office.
You sir, are an idiot.
First of all - you’re a member of Congress. Did you think no one would find out? Uh, hello? You’re a Republican. If Democrats even think you have sex (we’re not allowed to have sex you know, we’re all so uptight about it), let alone gay sex with an underage boy, they’re going to sick the dogs on you. You were caught on the prowl for it - hand in the cookie jar baby. You didn’t see this coming? You clearly don’t know your adversaries. Just a little warning - they’re not done with you yet.
Secondly - having your spokesman claim someone’s trying to smear you just reeks of amateur status. If this attraction was something that took place 30 years ago, releasing the correspondence would be a smear tactic. Disclosing objectionable and potentially illegal activity that took place currently is not. You did this, put your big boy undies on and man up to it.
Playing the “smear campaign of the worst kind” card only makes you look guiltier. If that’s the best response you’ve got for this, you’re in trouble. If I were you, I’d tell your PR people to start thinking of another way to spin this. I suggest you go the McGreevy route. Worked for him, will work for you. Might even get a book deal out of this whole thing.
And finally - if you’re going to use modern technology for a little dirty talk, and really I can’t blame you - I mean, who among us hasn’t, at least know how to cover your tracks. Technology is a glorious thing when it comes to adult activites, but it can also come back and bite you in the ass. As you’re now finding out.
Thank you for at least resigning your office, I’ll give you credit for that. I’d also like to say thanks for doing something so stupid, you’ve given people a reason to run around talking about Republican’s sex lives. You’ve given the lefty moonbats a reason to shout to the heavens that all Republicans are sexually repressed perverts who hide behind a mantra preaching family values. Yay, I’m so looking forward to debating that.
**UPDATE**
Had the opportunity to read some of the chat/email transcripts over breakfast this morning (don’t recommend that btw) - and Congressman Foley I have one final suggestion for you. Turn yourself in. Do not pass go, do not collect $200, go directly to your nearest police station and turn yourself in. Don’t try to spin it, don’t try to do anything else except apologize, throw yourself at the mercy of the court and take your punishment like a man.

Kevin Says: September 29th, 2006 at 9:40 pmWhat’s worse, a Republican Senator who was wanting to have sex with a former male page, or a sitting Democrat president who had sex with a female intern and lied about it?

Scrapiron Says: September 30th, 2006 at 2:03 amGreat Post. I understand that the same page implicated Barney Frank and another democrat. Sorry, I had the name but got paged out to get a couple of drunks out of a car crash and lost my place. Maybe i’ll find it sometime today as it’s now 5 A.M. and I just got in a few minutes ago. This volunteer fire rescue stuff is a pain sometimes, and I have about as much respect for a drunk driver as I do for a supid Senator.

Scrapiron Says: September 30th, 2006 at 2:04 amMake that a stupid Senator.

Phil Says: September 30th, 2006 at 6:58 amGreat post Farrah. If you’re gay and holding public office, do us all a favor and stay in your closet. Also, if you happen to prefer young boys do us all a favor and resign now before you get caught. I’d like 15 minutes alone with you Congressman Foley. You sicken me. All the legislation and bills you authored to protect children is now tainted. What were you doing, blowing smoke? Did you think writing bills to protect children from perverts like you would remove suspicion from you? You are a disgrace to the male gender and don’t even make a good homosexual.

Farrah Says: September 30th, 2006 at 11:31 amKevin - I’m going to go with soliciting a minor on this one. At least the intern was of age, and knew better. Foley went after a kid.
Phil - I’m going to have to disagree a bit. I could care less if Foley or Frank are gay. It’s none of my business who they care to sleep with so long as it doesn’t break the law. Foley went after a minor, and he should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.
And before anyone comes in here and starts bitching about why I had a problem with Clinton and his intern, the problem I had was the man lied under oath. Not that he stuck it in his intern.

Terry Says: September 30th, 2006 at 4:35 pmYep. Foley is a member of the House of Representatives, not a Senator. What would give that any importance at all is that it would only be two years before the voters could vote him out instead of 6 if he had been a Senator and had not resigned.
Now, having cleared up that minor point, let me go on the record to say that I’m not sure I can use the words I want to use about this “man(?)” and his actions. Since this is the blog of a Lady (yes, capitalized), it prevents me from using certain language. There is a phrase in Urdu (language in Pakistan) that I could phonetically spell out, but even knowing what that phrase means keeps me from using it. (Not teasing here, folks.)
What should encourage the lefties (hello, Steve) is that it is great that we “right-wing nuts” can attack Republicans as well as Democrats.
Now, for going after a young man, Foley needs to REALLY find religion because in my book the place in Hell that is now reserved for him has some of the highest and hottest flames.

Woody Says: September 30th, 2006 at 4:39 pmFarrah, I’ve got to agree with you.
All things considered, Clinton didn’t get any boost in his character quotion out of this.
I still think Monica exibited poor taste in men, too.
Woody

Woody Says: September 30th, 2006 at 4:43 pmTerry, use this line when you need to “fill in a blank”.
“Litany of blue, profane, derogatory, and truly felt emotions withheld for the protection of our children and the tender of ear.”

Kevin Says: September 30th, 2006 at 9:31 pmPhil,
Consider this:Foley may have authored bills to protect children, and I see how you may think that was/is hypocritical, but who better to write a piece of legislation to protect children than one who knows how they are preyed upon and obvioulsy has personal experience in this area?

Scrapiron Says: October 1st, 2006 at 12:23 pmAt what age is talking about sex legal? Is it the same as having sex. Rumor has it that the age of consent in D.C. is 16 which makes this a no crime.
I’m not defending him and would personally shoot the bastard if it involved one of my children, but then the P.C. crowd must go by what is ‘legal’ don’t they?
Now we can question the entire story and the timing of it’s release.

Phil Says: October 1st, 2006 at 3:53 pmKevin, good point, I stand corrected. I’d still like 15 minutes alone with this sorry excuse for a man. And Farrah, I have to disagree. I think it does make a difference if Foley is gay or straight. I believe the emotional damage done to a 16 year old male is considerably greater if the aggressor is a homosexual male as opposed to a hetrosexual female. So even if the young man is of legal age, as his father, I’m going to be more upset with Foley being a male than if Foley would be a female. If that is homophobic, so be it. But then I believe homosexuals choose their lifestyle and are not born that way. In my opinion, being hit on by an adult homosexual could alter an otherwise normally developing young male.

Scrapiron Says: October 1st, 2006 at 8:06 pmThis may not have been a one sided thing. There was some information that the young boy, legal age, had used a phony ID to cruise gay bars. But that was first day information. Now the FBI and Justice department have been called in. It’ll come out in a few days.

Tony Says: October 2nd, 2006 at 10:20 am“It’s vile,” said Rep. Mark Foley, R-West Palm Beach. “It’s more sad than anything else, to see someone with such potential throw it all down the drain because of a sexual addiction.” — Rep. Mark Foley, on Clinton’s escapades with Monica Lewinsky

Terry Says: October 2nd, 2006 at 10:23 amFrom one of the stories Farrah linked to:
“Efforts to reach the boy were unsuccessful, but he told the St. Petersburg Times last November, “I thought it was very inappropriate. After the one about the picture, I decided to stop e-mailing him back.” The Times didn’t publish the comments until Friday.”
My question is if this was known of in November of 2005 by the media, why did it take them nearly 11 months to report it?
Another question is how common is it to save one’s instant messages?
Also, who gave the e-mails and IM’s to ABC and why?
All these questions taken in context that we are about 5 weeks from election day. Seems awfully coincidental that the NIE report by the New York Times, Foley’s story the ABC, Bob Woodwards new book (which he even admitted that he really wanted to get the book published before the election) all came about within the last couple of months before said election. Also don’t forget that the brouhaha about Allen in Virginia and his “racial” comments are hitting FRONT PAGE in the newspaper while his opponents own admissions to saying the “n” word and engaging in other racial actions in black neighborhoods are found way back in the obscure pages of the same newspapers.
Having said that, what may we expect to see in the news in the next few weeks that are scandals that “just haven’t” been reported on before now?
Also, what is being reported on about Congressman Jefferson, Democrat of Louisiana, being investigated for accepting bribes? (Haven’t heard much have you?) Also, how much other than that one little request by Nancy Pelosi that he resign have we heard. After all he refused to resign and nothing else was said by the Democrats. BUT, say something nice about a retiring Senator on the Republican side and there was a never-ending litany of demands for Trent Lott’s resignation.
Where are the intellectually honest journalists and politicians?

Woody Says: October 2nd, 2006 at 12:48 pmSittin’ on that crap for eleven months certainly smacks of political expediancy. Why was that stuff given to ABC rather than the proper authorities to begin with? Can we not charge ABC with obstruction of justice for not forwarding that stuff to the proper authorities?
Where are the intellectually honest journalists and politicians?
A rare few intellectually honest journalist are on NRANEWS. I’m still looking for that intellectually honest politician. Ron Paul comes close, Tom Coburn comes close, ….
Woody

Tony Says: October 2nd, 2006 at 2:15 pmRon Paul is by far one of my favorite politicians! He actually replies to your emails and is VERY approachable… That alone stands out as an upstanding citizen…
